Rememering big Mexican Birthday Cakes

Birthdays in a Mexican household were a big deal, but not because it was the child’s birthday. It was because it was an opportunity for the adults to have a party. There was no character decorations or party hats but there was a huge cake that had to feed all the cousins and neighbors.

I remember having huge birthday cakes and always having to share it with my sister. My mom would ask me to share my birthday with her and let her pretend that the top tier was hers. I would blow out my candles and then my mom would redo them for my sister. Everyone would sing Feliz Cumpleanos again just for her.
