Telling Military Stories With Animation

On August 3rd, 2005, Marine Lance Cpl. Travis Williams’ squad was sent on a rescue mission in Barwanah, Iraq. During the patrol, one of their vehicles containing his entire squad was struck by a massive IED. This is his story:

The video has been shared on social media over the past couple of days and it is very moving. I shared it with my son who is in fifth grade because I thought that he would understand the content in it’s animated form. My son was moved by it and began to understand a little of what his father might have gone through. My son was very little when my husband was gone. I would try to explain in toddler terms where and what dad was doing but I don’t think it ever clicked. Now that he is older he has a lot of questions about dad’s time at war.

We looked at other StoryCorps videos he was so impressed. He liked the story telling and the animation. StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit whose mission is to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives.
